Brian is the founding member of Shevlin Smith. After beginning his legal career in the Arlington County Commonwealth Attorney's office, Brian began his civil law career as a defense attorney. He represented clients insured by Hartford, St. Paul and others defending personal injury and medical malpractice claims. In 1985, Brian left the defense side of law and opened his own firm that specalized in representing injured people for claims involving medical malpratice and other types of catastrophic personal injuries. That firm was the predecessor of Shevlin Smith. Since 1985, Brian has received hundreds of jury verdicts and settlements for injured persons in Virginia and the District of Columbia. One of his jury verdicts was even the subject of a made-for-television movie starring Susan Dey titled: "I Love You Perfect."

Brian is a graduate of the American University School of Law (J.D. 1970) and the University of Notre Dame (B.A. 1962; B.S. in Chem. Eng., 1963).
