CDC’s New Brain Injury Study Shows Increasing Traumatic Brain Injuries in the U.S.

On March 17, 2010 the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a new report on the frequency and causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the United States.  The report “Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States: Emergency Department Visits, Hospitalizations, and Death” found that traumatic brain injuries are rising in this country.

The report indicates that the frequency of traumatic brain injuries has risen by approximately 300,000 cases a year compared to the numbers cited by the Brain Injury Association of America.  Now, approximately 1.7 million people in the United States suffer from a TBI each year.  This results in more than a quarter million hospitalizations and over 50,000 deaths annually.

Traumatic brain injuries are one of the most common fatal injuries following an accident.  Young children under the age of four, teenagers (particularly those of driving age) and senior citizens are most at risk for serious complications following head injuries.

Brain injury victims may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.  The Washington D.C. and Virginia traumatic brain injury attorneys of Shevlin Smith have the experience and knowledge necessary to help victims with their legal recoveries.  Contact one of our compassionate and skilled VA brain injury lawyers at 703.591.0067 for a free confidential consultation.
