Woman Suffers Brain Damage after Virginia Birth Injury

Justice has been served for Latarsha Creekmore, a Portsmouth woman who almost bled to death after delivering a baby at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.
Latarsha Creekmore underwent a Caesarean section birth in early 2005. She spent the night in the hospital, and nurses were given express instructions to monitor her blood pressure, as she had a history of pregnancy-induced hypertension.
In the middle of the night, Creekmore’s heart-rate alarm went off. Court records indicated that nurses failed to check Creekmore's surgical incisions for over six hours; as a result, she had lost nearly half her blood through her stitches. Her sheets were soaked with blood and she was rushed into surgery at 3:30 a.m.
Although Creekmore survived, she suffered severe shock and brain damage.
An investigation revealed that the delivering physician, Sidath Jayanetti, had been the subject of several medical malpractice cases between 2001 and 2007, including a similar delivery error. Jayanetti surrendered his medical license during the trial and is under investigation by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
Creekmore was awarded $900,000 plus costs in a non-jury trial in 2009.
