Common DC Car Accident Injuries: Are you suffering from a pelvic fracture?

Pelvic fractures in Virginia are most commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, but can also develop as a result of falls, bodily violence, or sports. The elderly are at increased risk of these fractures, as they can happen spontaneously in those with osteoporosis.

Symptoms of a pelvic fracture following a DC car accident may include:

  • Pain in the thighs or buttocks
    Abdominal pain
Numbness or "pins and needles" in the lower extremities
Bleeding from any lower orifice, such as the rectum, urethra or vagina
    Discomfort when changing positions
Difficulty walking, running or even standing
    Painful or difficult urination

When examining you for a pelvic fracture, your doctor should evaluate your pain and symptoms, including checking for bone tenderness, weakness, and any loss of bodily function. He should also order an x-ray and CT scan to be sure there is no fragmentation of the bones in the pelvis.
Treatment for pelvic fractures depends on the severity of the case:

  • Physical rehabilitation. Some fractures can heal on their own, but the process is painful. Patients will often need crutches or walkers to lessen the weight on the pelvic bone. Pain medication is often prescribed, as well as blood thinners, since the loss of mobility can increase the risk of blood clots.
Surgery. A process called external fixation is used in extreme cases of pelvic fracture, often involving extensive organ damage. The patient is confined to a hospital bed as several screws are inserted on a frame from the outside, keeping the patient immobile as the injury heals.
Implants. Even when complete immobility is not required, pins, screws, or plates may be needed to piece the broken pelvis back together. This is a painful and often expensive procedure, and requires prolonged bed rest after surgery.

Even if the break was not life threatening, the damage can take weeks to repair, resulting in a long, painful recovery. The patient will have far less range of motion, and may be unable to work regular hours for months following the accident.
