Seventeen-year-old Aaron Benjamin Shirley of Berryville had his whole life ahead of him. Next fall, he would have been a senior at Clarke County High School, where he enjoyed playing football—if not for the accident that claimed his life earlier this month.
On the night of June 18, 2010, Aaron was riding in the bed of a pickup truck driven by another teenager and carrying four young people plus the driver in the cab of the truck. The driver was heading east on Summit Point Road when he took a curve too fast, hit an embankment and a tree, and then overturned. Aaron was thrown from the back of the pickup truck and was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30 a.m. on June 19.
The five other people in the truck were all injured and taken to Winchester Medical Center. One girl was later airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital because of the seriousness of her injuries.
Police are still investigating this accident but believe that both alcohol and speed were factors in the crash and in Aaron’s death.
We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of Aaron Shirley, and hope that future drunk driving and reckless driving tragedies can be avoided this summer.
