A Maryland biker faces several felony charges after his passenger waskilled in a Berkeley County motorcycle crash last year.
The April 14, 2011 crash took place around 11 p.m. in Darkesville. Steve Edward Thompson was driving his motorcycle south on U.S. 11 with 43-year-old Lorena Roberts as his passenger. According to police investigation, Thompson’s motorcycle went off the road in the 6500 block of Winchester Avenue, hit a utility pole, and crashed into the back of a Ford F-150 pickup truck in a parking lot.
Several witnesses in the adjacent restaurant saw the accident occur, reporting that the force of the impact moved the truck a significant distance from its parking space. Michael Lee Wills, a witness who had been having dinner with his wife, ran into the alley to see what had happened. Willis says that Thompson was standing over Roberts, who had been thrown from the motorcycle in the collision.
When Willis and his wife tried to confront Thompson, he fled the scene, allegedly climbing over fences to escape. The couple turned the body over and discovered it was Roberts, who was a friend of theirs.
When police arrived, Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thompson was apprehended by troopers about a hundred yards from the accident scene. While Thompson received treatment at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia for his injuries, police discovered that his blood alcohol concentration was .137 at the time of the crash.
Thompson was arrested upon release, and has been charged with four misdemeanor traffic offenses, driving under the influence causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
