While traffic fatalities have been falling in recent years, the number of bicycle fatalities has been rising. Our streets are becoming more congested with both motorists and bicyclists and it is getting more difficult and dangerous to share the road.
Yet, people are going to have to find a way to commute safely on different modes of transportation. Just last month Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced a significant change in federal government policy. According to Secretary LaHood, motorized transportation will no longer be favored at the expense of bicyclists and pedestrians.
In an effort to educate motorists and bicyclists about the benefits of biking to work, Bike to Work Week was held in Washington D.C. last week. People were encouraged to ride bikes to work to reduce our dependency on fuel, to reduce pollution, and to improve personal health. To keep the momentum of last week’s event going and to protect bicyclists and motorists from future tragedies, Washington D.C. has committed to creating more bike lanes so that people can get around the city safely.
The government and national biking associations remind people that both motorists and bicyclists must obey the rules of the road and look out for the safety of others in order to prevent needless tragedies.
