Local Teen Killed in Virginia Pedestrian Accident

Posted on Dec 08, 2011

A former student of W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax became the victim of a fatal Virginia bus crash earlier this week.

18-year-old Jane Hwang was walking across a street at 10 p.m. when she was struck by a City of Harrisonburg bus. Hwang, a freshman at James Madison University, died at the scene.

According to Virginia State Police, the 56-year-old bus driver will not face charges in the accident. The driver was making a legal left turn at a green light, and simply did not see Hwang because she was dressed in dark clothing.

Police believe that the main cause of the accident was pedestrian inattention, and that Hwang was crossing the road against the illuminated "Do Not Walk" sign. Police are still investigating other factors in the crash.

The attorneys at Shevlin Smith wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family after this tragic accident, and remind all pedestrians to be safe on the roads.
