Teenager Suffers Coma after Front Royal Car Accident

Posted on Feb 21, 2012

A young man who sustained serious head injuries in a Front Royal car crash is eager to return to school, his mother told reporters Wednesday.

16-year old James Brogan was driving down Browntown Road in Front Royal on January 11, when he lost control of his pickup truck and hit a tree shortly after 8 a.m.

Brogan, who suffered several broken bones, a collapsed lung and severe head injuries, was in a coma for several days after the crash and has been in the hospital since the day of the accident.

James’s mother,Carey Brogan, says that although he is still hospitalized at Inova Fairfax Hospital, James can walk with someone supporting him and is recuperating quickly. Thefamily is waiting to learn when James can start working on home-schooling material to make up for the time he has lost at Skyline High School.

Although James’s jaw must remain wired shut for another month, he has been talking by moving his lips and eating food through a straw. He is meeting daily with speech coaches and physical therapists, and will have to keep up with the rehabilitation regimen for several weeks to come.

"He is talking up a storm," Mrs. Brogan told reporters. "He realizes what a terrible accident he had. We show him pictures of his truck, and he can't believe it."

Family members, friends, and classmates at Skyline High School have all contributed money for James’s treatment and recovery, organizing community fundraisers to help his family cope with the cost of care.
