Late last month, the National Institutes of Health reported an exciting development in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. An NIH-funded study found that folate, a type of B vitamin, helps spinal cord injuries heal.
Specifically, the study found that folate stimulated a process known as DNA methylation. This change in DNA could lead to the healing of spinal cord injuries and other neurological injuries. Research already indicates that folate—which is found in green leafy vegetables—and its synthetic form, folic acid, are important to spinal-cord development in fetuses.
Currently, spinal cord injuries are not curable. Additional research is being done to find the optimal levels of folate for healing spinal cord injuries and to see if folate may be the basis of an eventual cure for spinal cord injuries.
Many people with spinal cord injuries face a lifetime of medical costs and lost income. They need a Virginia or Washington D.C. spinal cord injury attorney to help them recover compensation for their injuries.
