Motorcycle Ride To Work Day: What All Motorists Need To Know

In 2015, there was an 8.3% increase in motorcycle fatalities from 4,594 in 2014 to 4,976 in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Sadly, this number is of great concern, which is why it is important to remind all motorists to be on the lookout for not only the loud cruisers and sport bikes but especially the quiet mopeds, scooters, and other two- or three-wheeled motorcycles.

This is one of the reasons that this coming Monday, June 19, 2017, is National Ride to Work Day. It’s a way for motorcyclists to come together and remind the public that motorcyclists come from all walks of life and that biker stereotypes are no longer true. Not only does this day serve to make the public aware of the need to share the road with motorcyclists, but it is a way to educate the public about the benefits of riding a motorcycle, such as saving fuel and reducing traffic and parking congestion.

Although there are benefits to motorcycling, riding a motorcycle comes with great risk which is why NHTSA urges all motorists to help reduce the number of motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Some great safety reminders from NHTSA include:

  • Motorcyclists. Make yourself visible on the road and always ride with a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet and, of course, ride sober.
  • Other motorists. Be polite and share the road with motorcycles. Always be alert and looking for small motorcycles and scooters in traffic, especially before making a left-hand turn or pulling out of a parking lot or driveway. Unfortunately, many motorcycle accidents occur when a driver is attempting to turn left and fails to detect an approaching motorcycle.

Sadly, many drivers fail to see small motorcycles on the road, and sometimes drivers are speeding, texting and driving, driving drowsy, driving drunk or drugged, or just being careless while driving. Any type of negligent behavior at the wheel that leads to a motorcycle crash and injuries or fatalities is grounds for a personal injury lawsuit. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle crash and you would like to discuss your possible case and rights to financial compensation, please call our office today for a complimentary consultation.
