Signs of Placental Abruption

| Mar 12, 2014 | Birth Injuries

Pregnancy can be both an exciting and terrifying time for a mother. There are so many things to prepare for, so many things to remember, and so many things that could go wrong.

That’s why many women rely on the knowledge and advice of their OB-GYN. A licensed prenatal doctor would never ignore potentially harmful risks to a patient’s baby, would he?

Maybe not on purpose-but a case of simple neglect could drastically affect you and your child.

Placental Abruption is the medical term for the separation of the placenta from the uterine wall. While many factors can lead to abruption, the most frequent cause is abdominal trauma, such as a car accident or other violent act. It may also be an effect of drug use, heavy drinking, increased age, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Whatever the cause, placental abruption in Virginia can have severe consequences for you and your baby, including:

  • Brain damage. In addition to supplying your baby with nutrients, the placenta also supplies oxygen to your womb. Infants can suffer brain damage or death if this lack of oxygen is not corrected immediately.
  • Miscarriage. If the mother experiences trauma early in the pregnancy, uncontrolled bleeding could cause her to lose the baby.
  • Cesarean section. If the fetus is close enough to term, an emergency c-section may be necessary to save the baby’s life.
  • Hemorrhaging. Many abruptions endanger the mother’s life by causing severe bleeding. If the doctor cannot control the bleeding, the mother may be forced to undergo an emergency hysterectomy-negating the possibility of future children.

As experienced Fairfax medical malpractice attorneys, we know that infants born under a placental abruption have a 50% chance of suffering side effects as a result. This is why it is important never to ignore any strange symptom of pregnancy-and to seek medical attention at the first sign of distress.

Pregnant women are urged to check themselves for these signs of placental abruption in DC:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Clots
  • Back pain or abdominal pain
  • Constant uterine contractions

Remember: it is your doctor’s responsibility to provide close, constant care for you and your child. If your doctor missed the early warning signs of placental abruption, we can hold him responsible for your loss. Call Shevlin Smith today at 703-721-4233 for a free consultation.
