The Importance Of Getting Support From Others After A Birth Injury

On Behalf of | Nov 2, 2017 | Birth Injuries, Library

The most joyous day in a family’s life is bringing a child into the world; however, sometimes, this day is also marked by trauma. Sadly, many children suffer from unnecessary birth injuries that occur during labor and delivery due to negligence on the part of a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional. Consequently, a baby may have to suffer the reality of a birth injury for days, months, years, or even a lifetime.

When a baby suffers, a family also suffers—especially when the injury is severe. Not only is finding out about an infant’s birth injury scary, but it is a very emotional time that causes parents to worry and have many sleepless nights. In fact, many parents who find out about their child’s birth injury cannot eat, sleep, or function at work. The new reality of such an injury can even cause a parent to suffer from anxiety and depression.

Because the news of a child’s birth injury is sudden and terrifying, parents of the injured child often have a hard time being there for their injured child, taking care of their other children, taking care of the house, and even taking care of themselves. This is why families impacted by devastating birth injuries need to rely on others during such a difficult time.

Getting Support From Others

Some of the people who can support your family after finding out about your child’s birth injury can include:

  • Other family members. It is important to turn to other family members for help during this time. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives can help take your other kids to school, take care of the house, or do whatever else you need them to do.
  • Friends. Many friends will go grocery shopping for you, walk your dog, make your dinner, or do anything you ask of them.
  • Neighbors. You may be surprised to find that a neighbor may be more than willing to move the garbage cans in for you, water the flowers, or pick up your packages left on your porch while you are at the hospital dealing with your child’s injury.
  • Church body. Many churches have programs in place where they help families going through difficult times. Sometimes, support can come through prayer and other times someone in the church may bring your family dinner.

Many families who are dealing with tough, emotional situations often keep their matters private and don’t want to burden others with their problems. However, most people enjoy helping others and feel like they are contributing to society by lending a hand and doing a good deed. We urge you to ask those around you for help and support during this difficult time in your life. Just getting a dinner made for you or knowing someone is praying for your child can help.

Although no amount of support can take away what happened to your child, knowing you are loved and supported by others can help you get through this difficult time.
