Being the first in your family to pursue a four-year college degree can be intimidating. Without close guidance from family, you might feel unprepared at university. At Shevlin Smith, P.C., we want to uplift first-generation college students through our First-in-Family Scholarship, a $1,000 opportunity available in the fall and spring semesters.

This scholarship is open to students with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. Applications for the Spring 2027 semester are open until [MM/DD/YYYY].

Application Requirements

If you are eligible for the First-in-Family Scholarship, we encourage you to submit an application. All applicants must submit essay responses to the following two questions. Essays should be less than 2,500 characters total, spaces included.

Essay Prompt #1

Describe your educational journey leading to your acceptance into your future college program.

Essay Prompt #2

How do you believe your undergraduate education will benefit you and your family?

In addition, applicants must include proof of college enrollment or acceptance, a transcript or class schedule, proof of household income, and a headshot.

How Will Your Application Be Evaluated?

During the review period, our scholarship team will grade all essay submissions based on the following criteria:

Narrative

Is your response compelling, original, and written from your own experiences?

Clarity

Do you clearly address the whole prompt in your written response?

Structure

Does your essay stay focused on a central point?

Award Amount

$1000 award to one student per college semester

Qualifying for the First-in-Family Scholarship

You may apply for the First-in-Family Scholarship if you meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a first-generation college student, meaning that your parents or guardians have not attained any sort of higher education.
  • You must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an undergraduate program within the United States for the Fall 2026 semester.
  • You must be at least 17 years old.
  • You must be a citizen of the United States.
